Domestic Moving FAQs
MiniMoves shipments are paid in full after pick up and prior to delivery. Acceptable methods of payment are Visa, MasterCard and Discover. In the event of additional items that are added on from the binding estimated cost order for service, we will provide you with the new binding cost prior to processing any payment.
Shipments that are not paid in full prior to delivery may result in extended delivery spreads and possible storage.
If there is a choice, most moving companies suggest you select a time other than summer, the end of the month or the end-of-year holidays. Relocation demands are high during these times. Factors involved when considering the time to move:
- whether the move must be made immediately
- moving children during the school term
- separation of the family while the move is under way

Most refrigerators, washers, dryers, and other electrical or mechanical appliances require special servicing to ensure safe transportation. Any moving parts such as motors on major appliances, washer drums, and icemakers should be securely fastened for shipment. Gas appliances need to be serviced and disconnected prior to your move.
Most people prefer to use professional moving packing services for their household possessions, especially fragile items. However, if you decide to pack these items yourself, remember that the basic principles of good packing include wrapping the items individually, providing plenty of cushioning and making sure of a firm pack.
Be sure to select a sturdy container with a lid. Place a two- or three-inch layer of crushed paper on the bottom of the carton as a cushion. Wrap each item individually with a soft material to provide a safe, protective, “padded nest.” Pack the heaviest items on the bottom and the lighter ones next, filling in empty spaces with crushed paper. Place plates on edge and glassware on rims for maximum protection. Mark the carton “Fragile,” and list the contents on the outside. Be sure to seal the carton with tape.
MiniMoves does not recommend leaving items within drawers to prevent any loss, or adding additional weight to the relocated piece which would cause difficulty in the transport of the item.
Items of extraordinary value, such as jewelry, money, photographs, antiques, and stamp collections, can be included in your shipment. However, it is essential to inform your relocation specialist about these items before packing or moving day. We strongly recommend that you carry irreplaceable and high-value items with you or make alternative arrangements for their transport.
In the moving industry, items worth more than $100 per pound are considered to be articles of “extraordinary” value. To be assured that a claim involving these articles is not limited to minimal liability, complete and sign the High-Value Inventory form and sign the “Extraordinary (Unusual) Value Article Declaration” box on the Bill of Lading. If no articles of extraordinary value are included in your shipment, simply write “none” on the High-Value Inventory form and sign it.
Timing is key. In response to many FAQs for our moving company, it is still best to arrange your move within 4-6 weeks so that it allows your moving company to have as much lead time as possible to meet delivery dates. If a pick-up and delivery date is determined based upon lease expiration or closing dates, there may be extra costs for specific dates, expedited service or guaranteed deliveries.
MiniMoves provides over the phone pre-move surveys and binding estimates to determine the cost of your move based upon the items and services discussed during the estimation process. Keep in mind that an estimate is only as good as the information provided. If the information is vague, the estimate will only be a guideline for moving cost.
Local moves are calculated on an hourly basis with a minimum hourly requirement.
What is a binding estimate? A binding estimate or binding cost of service specifies in advance the precise cost of the move based on the services requested or deemed necessary at the time of the estimate. If additional services are requested or required at origin or destination (such as a “shuttle” from a location to which a full-size van cannot operate directly), the total moving cost will increase. Binding estimates are valid for the time period specified, up to 30 days.
If you add items to be moved or require additional moving company services, such as packing, between the time of the estimate and the time of your move, there will be additional charges. An addendum specifying these additional charges will be prepared for your signature.
Yes, you are protected but the amount of “protection” or valuation coverage is contingent upon the option chosen on the household goods bill of lading.
Full replacement value protection: if an item is lost, destroyed, or damaged while in transit with MiniMoves; MiniMoves will either repair the damaged article to the previously shipped condition or pay replacement cost.
Released value: With this form of coverage the maximum liability for loss or damage to any item within the shipment is 60 cents times the weight of the item.
If you are unable to accept delivery within MiniMoves standard transit time, we offer temporary moving storage for your items at the local destination terminal in a safe environment until you are ready for delivery. However, you are responsible for storage charges, warehouse valuation coverage (if transportation valuation was elected) warehouse handling charges and final delivery of the shipment (if storage is greater than 6 months). International Moving FAQs
There is no standard pricing for international moves because air and sea freight costs fluctuate regularly. Pricing is typically based on an estimate of your shipment’s weight and volume.
Destination Country: All international moves require customs clearance upon arrival.

Duties & Taxes: Certain countries impose taxes or duties on household goods, even if they are used.

Furniture is wrapped in paper pads or corrugated cardboard for most international moves.
For moves between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, we use blanket wrapping.
Bulky items are typically not shipped by air due to high costs and size limits.

Moving stress often comes from not knowing what’s next. To eliminate that stress, we connect each customer with an experienced relocation coordinator to answer questions, update records, and communicate frequently throughout the stages of the move. That single point of contact at our US-based call center works in the background and monitors each customer’s move to ensure we meet our scheduling and service promises.
Our first strategy is to avoid claims by doing a good job. Claims occur on nearly 1 in 4 shipments industry wide. Claims occur on 1 in 17 moves at MiniMoves, and that’s because of our well-defined service process. Our crews check-off the inventory with our customers after delivery, inspecting every item and making note of any missing items or apparent damage. That process helps support the customer’s claim if it becomes necessary to file for loss or damage. If a customer needs to file a claim, we don’t turn them over to an insurance company to settle the claim. Our claims manager reviews every claim to get them settled quickly and to identify any deficiencies in our process that might be contributing to loss or damage claims. We see the claims process as our last chance to take care of our customers.
Transit times are often a concern. We set up a loading schedule, identify a range of dates that transportation will require, and then coordinate delivery within four days of the day the shipment arrives at our destination terminal. We meet our schedule 98% of the time, but it can take 7 to 14 days for the shipment to travel cross country to our destination agent for final delivery. Claims continue to be the single most disappointing event that occurs during a move and while our cargo claims rate is the lowest in the industry at one in 17 moves, it you are that one person who needs to file a claim for cargo damage, it’s a big concern until the claim is properly settled. We work diligently to settle all claims in 30 days or less.

Operations & Logistics FAQs
Driver shortages plague the moving industry every summer because of a limited number of trucks and drivers available to meet peak demand periods. Our service model is different. We use the general freight industry, which has an unlimited supply of trucks and drivers, to transport our loaded containers. Because our crews are local to the area where the move is loading or unloading, we do not face the logistics challenges that major van lines face. In major markets we have more than one MiniMoves service provider so if one is busy on a given day, we can assign the shipment to our partner who has availability to meet the customer’s date request.
Successful moving companies today must be diversified to be successful. The makeup of our network is 50% agents of major van lines and 50% independent moving companies. Small moves blend easily into the daily work schedules of our partners, so we are a good incremental business fit for most companies. Our service model lets us operate without blackout dates or restrictions during the peak moving season. We might have a capacity issue for one day in one or two markets, but we’re never blacked out for weeks at a time. MiniMoves’ shipping containers are loaded at our warehouses, away from rain, sleet, snow, or extreme heat. Local loading and delivery are done using small trucks that allow for quick loading and unloading even in extreme weather, keeping our customers’ belongings are carefully padded and protected from the elements.
We provide long-term storage at any of our 137 warehouse locations. These warehouses are owned by our local service agents. MiniMoves Inc offers long-term storage at our company-owned warehouse in the Chicago IL area.

The two gentlemen picking up my load were very friendly, made sure all boxes were labeled and taped securely and blanket wrapped little furniture items I had. They were fast and we were very impressed and pleased with their work. I had requested a specific date if possible and they said it would be a charge so I said no and went with the timeline of dates given to be but to my delight they actually picked up on the date I wanted which was so much easier for me and my mom that was moving. First time customer. The upfront quoting process was very easy to do with Steve on the phone. It was very thorough and the charge was fair; I was ultimately charged a little bit less in the end which is always a welcome surprise. Insurance was offered but not aggressively pushed, up to each individual based on their belongings. Lue was in constant communication about paperwork, necessary logistics for the movers, and accurate timelines.
I moved from Dallas to Chicago. Dallas required a third party mover and they couldn’t have picked a better team. Their names escape me at this time unfortunately, but they were early, courteous, and efficient. They were done well in advance and took tremendous care of my belongings.
The shipment arrived early on according to the estimated delivery window. I had plenty of notice as to the timeframe of their arrival as Eric from MiniMoves called the day before and morning of to verify. Eric, CJ, and Tashawn were easy to work with and took great care of the belongings as I instructed them as to where everything should go. And once again were in and out very quickly.
I cannot recommend this service enough. Moving is hard and I didn’t have a lot of helping hands available to me in Dallas. Worth every penny and I will use this service again in the future.

Incredible Cross-Country Move with Outstanding Support
Mini Moves was incredible through my cross country move experience. First of all, Steve Narrod and team personally took care of me through the whole process and were extremely communicative and transparent throughout the weeks long preparation and final drop off. I had made a mistake on scheduling my delivery date and it put me in a huge bind with my medication and other important items being packed. Steve worked swiftly, even over the weekend, to do whatever he could with all his teaming partners across the country to make sure I got my stuff just in time. I understand this is a hard feat at this time after talking to other friends and family who have moved recently. They all had horror stories about their valuables being lost or stuck in freight, so I was unsure if Steve and his team at Mini Moves could pull it off- but they did!!!! On top of all this, Minimoves was the only company in the greater San Antonio area that was able to facilitate a vehicle transport with their partner companies. THANK YOU MINI MOVES!!!!

Above and Beyond 4BR House Move in Stormy Weather
MiniMoves went above and beyond for my move! We had inclement weather, and they still managed to power through our move with amazing pacing given the circumstances. They managed to do our entire 4BR house move in stormy weather during school-hours, so our child was able to be out of the way during the entire process which made things so much easier for us. Exceptional Antique Glider Move from Virginia to New Hampshire
Researched ways to move an antique 3 seat porch glider from VA to NH and after talking with a number of moving companies decided on MiniMoves. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The glider would be difficult to transport assembled because its heavy metal construction rocks when moved or carried any distance. Therefore, prior to MiniMoves arrival I dissembled it into its 3 component pieces, the glider seat, the glider base, and the seat support straps. The movers did an exceptional job of wrapping and protecting the individual components in heavy movers blankets and then securing them together and wrapping them as one unit for transport. Pickup and delivery were accomplished on dates specified in the contract by extremely competent and professional individuals. I was very pleased with the process and the results. I definitely recommend MiniMoves!!!!
Reliable Small-Volume Move from California to New Zealand
The volume of items we wanted to move was too small for the traditional movers we approached, but one of them recommended MiniMoves. They were great – kept us informed, coordinated with international movers, their packers arrived on time and were careful. It wasn’t particularly cheap but wasn’t unreasonable for the volume we shipped (around 100 cubic feet). Would use them again for a similar move (California to New Zealand)

I have engaged MiniMoves twice so far to relocate photos and other keepsakes from storage units (CA to FL, FL to MA). Both times the cost was cheaper than DIY (considering one-way truck rental, insurance, gas, tolls, food, hotel, chiropractor needed after I would inevitably wrench my back…). Amazing Chicago to Cincinnati Move with Expert Team
WOW was I ever lucky to find Mini Moves! Paul was terrific in helping me figure out the amount and type of items I would need to move. The quote was *extremely* reasonable. Vanessa followed up promptly with paperwork and was very accommodating. But the absolute best part were our Movers! The team of Johnny, Primo, Moises and Chava was nothing short of amazing. They were on time to the very minute; packed our things with care and precision; gave us terrific advice on certain items; and worked their tails off all morning. AND we were moving out of a 3rd-floor walk-up condominium on a one-way street in Chicago, so they were hiking up and down 3 flight of stairs and managed a tight fit for their truck, all with a great attitude! I would use Mini Moves again in a heartbeat!
Best Move Yet, Even After Dozens, Including International Moves
We’ve moved dozens of times through the years, including international moves. This was the first mini-type move. They were the best of all moves we experienced. Their style, practices and professionalism should be cloned by like companies in/out of their field. If there was a rating higher than an A+, I would give it.

We did a partial move of furniture from CT to FL and used this company. Within a day of signing up, I received a call from a local mover that they utilize and we set up a date for pickup. A week before the move, we finalized what we were moving with our contact a Mini Moves. The day before the move, the local movers called to verify everything. On the day of the move, they were on time and took EXTREME care to wrap all our furniture. We’ve had three major moves and we have never had this kind of care. The shipment arrived two weeks after pickup – right on the schedule of “within three weeks.” Those movers came on the day promised and on time. Not only that, they put all of our furniture in the rooms we selected and even moved a few boxes that they originally placed. We would highly recommend them!
