What Not to Pack When Moving

We suggest that you have our packing professionals pack

We suggest that you have our packing professionals pack and move your apartment or home for you. We’re trained in proper procedures, have the right moving materials for packing and can complete the job in a quarter of the time. When you use our packing services, your house stays as functional as it is today until the day before your move.

However, if you decide to do most of your own packing for your move, we recommend that you at least have us pack and prepare:

  • Glass tops, mirrors and pictures
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Extremely fragile items

We can also arrange crating for:

  • Marble tops
  • Large glass tops
  • Pool table slate
  • Valuable paintings and artwork

Most refrigerators, washers, dryers, and other electrical or mechanical appliances also require special servicing to ensure safe transportation. Any moving parts such as motors on major appliances, washer drums, and icemakers should be securely fastened for shipment. Gas appliances need to be serviced and disconnected prior to your move.

No matter who packs your home, these things absolutely should not be packed into boxes for your move:

  • Cash
  • Securities
  • Jewelry
  • Firearms or ammunition
  • Personal papers like birth certificates, deeds, and policies
  • Coin or stamp collections
  • Irreplaceable family photos
  • Flammables, matches, lighters, fireworks or explosives, fuels, solvents, or aerosol cans
  • Bleach or other caustic liquids are also a risk because if they leak, they will cause damage to other items

Not that movers don’t love them, but pets also cannot be carried on the moving van or shipped in the container. Dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and other small pets are best transported with you in the car or with your airline if you are flying.

There is a great guide with pro-level tips for packing on our website that will help you safely get your packing done.
